Respite Placements

Respite care enables families to attend to relationships, providing them with the opportunity to engage with one another without the pressure of caring for their elderly relative. Periodic respite can help carers relax and return revitalised and better able to care for their loved one.

Similarly, respite care provides the care recipient with a change from the daily routine and gives them something to look forward to. Respite care can also deliver the benefit of gradually introducing aged care to those that are "set in their ways" and reluctant to accept the changed situation.

Families who care for their elderly relative or friend are often stretched to breaking point. Respite helps to strengthen their resolve and manage their exhaustion.

Respite, hospice and palliative care

Many people confuse respite, hospice and palliative care believing that they are one and the same. Yet each is distinct with a specific role in the care of residents. A hospice is a place where specially trained staff care for elderly people with life threatening illnesses in a home like environment with hospital like facilities and resources. Palliative care is the active total care of the elderly who are not responsive to treatment. The focus of palliative care is on making people comfortable, controlling their pain and helping to make their final days easier.

Respite care which provides that much needed break is an important component of the care spectrum enabling the whole family to relax and unwind.

What are the costs of respite care?

Respite care is a government subsidised program designed to give the carer a break from caring duties and can be provided in low level or high level aged care, depending upon your requirements.

If you have a current Aged Care Assessment recommending low or high care residential respite care, you may have up to 63 days of respite care in each financial year, with allowable extensions of 21 days at a time if necessary.

When receiving residential respite care, you will be asked to pay a basic daily care fee. The fee for residential respite care is based upon the current pension rate and is affordable.
