Rosden Private Nursing Home1 Royton Street East Burwood 3151
ROSDEN
will be forced to relocate all its residents after a safety audit last night found
it ‘’failed to provide a safe and clean environment’’.
Rosden Private
Nursing home failed 17 of 44 categories of the audit and will have to find temporary
accommodation for its 55 residents from October 1 2008.
In a statement
just released today (24 september 2008) the nursing home’s management “apologised
to our residents and family members who are understandably upset about the situation’’.
“We have been running aged care facilities for almost a decade, offering
the highest quality care possible to our residents has always been our number
one priority,’’ the statement said.
“But we recognise that the building
at Rosden is old and this can make this difficult, despite the best efforts of
our dedicated staff.’’
Management said the nursing home had obtained approval
for a $19 million overhual that would start in six weeks and it hoped “this building
can progress once compliance issues have been resolved’’.
“Meetings will
be organised for residents and families as well as staff.
Residents and
families have also received a letter from the department outlining the situation
and giving them contact details for further information.”
The tough sanction
to close the nursing home was imposed by the Federal Department of Health and
Ageing. It is the second time the nursing home has had to relocate residents -
last year it was shut down for two weeks because of a gastro outbreak.
In
the audit Rosden Private Nursing Home was found to have dirty bathroom facilities,
fire hazards, eight bed dorms which don’t meet privacy standards, shared male
and female toilets and bathrooms, an inadequate number of toilets and bathrooms,
unsafe storage of chemicals and ineffective security.
Aged and Community
Care Victoria chief executive Gerard Mansour said audit failures like Rosden Private
Nursing Home’s were isolated and regrettable incidents.
“The priority
of our industry will be to minimise any disruption and provide support to residents
and their families at this challenging time,’’ he said. The Department of Health
and Ageing will work with residents’ families and other nursing homes to relocate
residents.
It will also send auditors to Rosden Private Nursing Home daily
as well as Commonwealth nurses twice daily to carry out inspections. Minister
for Ageing, Mrs Justine Elliot said the action was ``about protecting frail and
aged Australians”. “We make no apologies for taking prompt action to protect older
Australians,’’ she said.Would you like to discuss your families residential
